Richard Lloyd Schaub, 83, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication. Born to Lloyd and Olive Schaub in Santa Monica, California, he was the middle child of three. He was raised in West Los Angeles until the age of 16.
At 16, Richard moved to live with his Uncle Chuck and Aunt Gertie Dillenbeck in Canyon Country, CA, where he learned valuable skills in ranching and the butcher trade. These experiences shaped his future and instilled in him a deep passion for the cowboy way of life. He graduated from Hart High School (Newhall, CA) in 1959, where he excelled on the basketball team. He was dedicated to attending almost all the class reunions and enjoyed the long-lasting friendships of his classmates and coach.
Richard became a skilled butcher, which eventually brought him to Hinckley, Utah. He worked for Marion & Dean’s, Doves, and Jubilee grocery stores as a butcher for many years. He continued to practice and teach his skills throughout his life. He dedicated 18 years as a ranch hand for the Christensen family and over 27 years for the Bassett family until his retirement. During this time, he also had his own farm with meticulously bread cattle and horses. He had the opportunity to feed mustangs brought in by the BLM for seven years. He had a great love of horses and owned many over the years. One of his favorite hobbies was growing a small crop of potatoes each year. After retirement, he became an avid fan of the rodeo channel.
Richard lived a life that truly embodied the spirit of a cowboy. He had a great love for the outdoors and could usually be found on weekends on Swasey Mountain, checking on his cattle and watching the wild mustangs roam. He loved hunting there, and his greatest trophy was his 31” 4-point buck. Many great memories were made with friends and family on that mountain.
Richard married Roxanne Smith in 1964, and they had one child; they later divorced. He then married Mary Jo Finlinson in 1970, and they had one child and later divorced. He is survived by his children, Matthew Schaub, Tiffany Weekes (Russ) of St George, UT, and Heidi Western (Russ) of Oak City, UT. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren each of whom he cherished dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Bill Schaub and Maggie McDaniel and many great friends that were family to him.
To his family, he was more than just a father, grandfather, and great-grandpa; he was the best father, a favorite uncle and nephew, a patient and kind mentor and a loyal friend. His presence brought comfort and wisdom to those around him, and his legacy will live on through the values he instilled in his loved ones.
Richard will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be a guiding light for those who had the privilege of knowing him.
