Marjorie Turner Stevens

May 6, 1915 — July 16, 2017

Marjorie Turner Stevens, age 102, passed away July 16, 2017 in Fillmore, Utah.  She was born May 6, 1915 in Holden, Utah to Rawldo Ward Turner and Elmeda Johnson Turner.  She married Melvin Stevens, September 15, 1937 in the Logan LDS Temple, Logan, Utah.  They were blessed with three daughters and one son.  Their posterity now totals 85 people, spanning five generations.

Marjorie was born in a two room house in Holden.  The home was later moved to Greenwood.  With 9 children in the family, the boys had to sleep on the screened back porch and would sometimes wake up with snow on them.  There were 2 or 3 beds in the bedrooms and even a folding cot in the bathroom.

She attended elementary school in Holden, Utah and graduated from Millard High School maintaining many dear friends throughout her life.  She excelled as a typist and found employment in Salt Lake City at the LDS Business College and the Salt Lake Mission Home.  She knew President Grant personally and enjoyed her associations there and with Mission Home President Taylor, President Grant’s son-in-law.

Mom and Dad loved to dance and go to different towns with other couples to enjoy this activity.  They would often reminisce and share these fun experiences with us.  She was a talented pianist and played for the first theater in Holden and on many other occasions.  She was also the lead in various plays that took place in Holden.

She was a great cook and homemaker and spent her career working at the Fillmore Elementary Lunch Room.  She was an expert vegetable and flower gardener and took pride in maintaining her corner lot on Main Street.  There were many beautiful quilts produced in the living room by Mom with assistance from her sisters and the neighbor ladies.

Marjorie was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized in the Bennett Pond. She served as the Holden Ward Primary President and Ward Relief Society President, as the Relief Society pianist for many years, and in many other ward and stake callings.

She is survived by her children Bryant Stevens (Clara) Holden, Utah and Marjean Christensen (Cleve), Kanosh, Utah; 17 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Berniece Stephenson (Tom – deceased) and Phyllis Tanner (Nathan); brother, Don Turner (Verna – deceased).  She was preceded in death by her husband; daughters, Nadine Willoughby (Dale) and JoAnn Stevens; two granddaughters, JoAnn Stevens and Nancy Willoughby; great-granddaughter, Andee M’lee Stevens; sisters, Shirley Hendrickson (Claude), Ellen Stevens (Mailon), and Alta Turner; and brothers, Ward Turner (Roma and LaVell) and Claude Turner (Dean).
